GAY COMICS & GAY COMIC ACTIVISM
THE AWARD-WINNING ANTHOLOGY EDITED BY ANDY MANGELS!

GAY COMIX/GAY COMICS

Gay Comix was founded in September 1980 by Howard Cruse (editor) and Denis Kitchen (publisher, Kitchen Sink Enterprises).

Robert Triptow became editor with issue #5 (1984), and Bob Ross of Bay Area Reporter took over as publisher with issue #6 (November 1985). Triptow's final issue was #13 (1991, though incorrectly dated Summer/Autumn 1988).

Andy Mangels became editor in 1991, and immediately instituted a gender parity rule, wherein 1/2 of all material would be by male-identified creators, and 1/2 would be by female-identified creators. He also upped the page count and publication frequency, and instituted higher page rates for creators. He produced two issues under the name of Gay Comix, then changed the name to the more mainstream "Gay Comics" with the fifteenth issue. The series ended with a double-sized 25th issue in 1998.
